Review the data you organized. Do federal government shutdowns seem to occur more frequently when there is divided government (one party controlling the presidency and another party controlling one or both chambers of Congress)?  Do the shutdowns seem to last longer when there is divided government versus when there is not?

Based upon what you have learned from this exercise, how much can we blame political polarization for government shutdowns?  What appears to be the root cause of the majority of shutdowns and how did you come to your conclusion? Your analysis should be at least 650 words and include a minimum of three citations.

Scenario

The  Sleep Tight! Resort and Conference Center of Albuquerque, N.M. has a  staff of over 300 full time employees and 100 seasonal employees in 10  different job categories. For the past twenty-five years the resort has  been run by the Clause family. The Clause family has had experience in  running several small motels and were very knowledgeable of the  industry. However, while they tried to treat the employees fairly, Mimi  Clause, the Manager, knew nothing of proper HR practices and tended to  make arbitrary decisions. She left many of the HR decisions to the  employment department which consisted of a secretary and an employment  supervisor who had been a secretary for Mimi’s mother. Eighteen months  ago, the family decided to hire Frank Jones as the new Manager of the  resort.  After evaluating the current operations, Frank Jones, decided that  the Resort was in fairly good shape except for the lack of standardized  Human Resource practices. Very little information existed to support any  of the past employment decisions, especially in the area of selection.  Although Jones does not have any direct experience in HR, he had taken  several courses in HRM while in college.  In the last eighteen months, Jones has encountered several problems. He would like you to:

  • Evaluate the situation and identify the problem
  • Include short bullet point recommendations for each weekly assignment.

Questions: Answer both

3a. Ma Clause has been receiving pressure from several local  organizations to develop an affirmative action program. While the resort  does not have any government projects, she feels that an AAP would be  in the best interest of the resort. Mr. Jones wants you to provide a  summary of AAPs along with an audit procedure for evaluating the current  situation and establishing goals.

3b. Recently several disabled individuals applied for jobs at the  resort. Out of panic all were hired by the managers. Mr. Jones now wants  to know the Resorts responsibility under the law and a recommended  course of action.

Review the two articles about bank failures and bank diversification that are found below this. Economic history assures us that the health of the banking industry is directly related to the health of the economy. Moreover, recessions, when combined with banking crisis, will result in longer and deeper recessions versus recessions that do occur with a healthy banking industry.
