Assignment 2: Impression Management

Assignment 2: Impression Management

Impression management is something that we all employ from time to time to achieve certain goals in our life. Sometimes we want to appear likable, other times we want to appear competent, and yet other times we desire to gain control or power over a situation, all of which can yield positive outcomes.

Yet at other times we self-handicap in order to appear like we have not been incompetent or failed, which we often perceive as a positive outcome because we have protected the way others see us (or at least we feel we have). •In what situation are you most likely to use impression management? What situation are you most likely not going to work to use impression management? What is the typical difference between these two situations?

•Provide an example of when you used impression management successfully. What was the outcome and why?

•Now provide an example in which you attempted to use impression management and it failed. Why did it fail, and what was that outcome?

•In this last situation would the outcome have felt better if you had used a self-handicapping strategy? What type of self-handicapping strategy could you have used? Finally, what are the dangers of turning to this kind of strategy on a regular basis?

As the new HR manager of a jewelry company, you have put together some preliminary reports for the CEO. One of the reports you compiled focuses on employee turnover.

The jewelry company is an organization with aggressive expansion goals. In the last 2 years, the company has continually hired new employees, yet it has not achieved the staffing levels it desired. The company knew that some employees had left the organization, but turnover rates have not been formally tracked.

After your preliminary fact-finding, you were surprised to discover that the turnover rate for the past year was 38%. You know the CEO will not be pleased with this turnover rate, and you have made the decision to prepare yourself more before presenting the report to the CEO.

Turnover presents a significant cost for an organization, so you recognize that this will be an opportunity for you to demonstrate how you can partner with the executive team to turn this situation around and help the company be more competitive. Prepare a short presentation for the CEO on the situation and possible reasons as to why employees are leaving at such a high rate.

As you are preparing your presentation, consider the following: 1. In detail, discuss several of the reasons why employees tend to leave organizations. 2. You plan to present the financial impact to the CEO to get a real sense of the significance of the situation. What factors will you consider in preparing this financial estimate? For this assignment, you are not required to determine the actual dollar figure, but instead, you are to consider what would contribute to the cost of turnover.

3. Being proactive, what measures can be taken to assess the morale of current employees, and how likely they are to leave or stay? 4. What process do you recommend for partnering with the management team to reduce turnover in the upcoming years? 5. As you consider your role, how will you position this to the CEO to demonstrate the value you can bring to addressing this problem?

Write a 750- to 1,000-word paper explaining the extent to which the technology is potentially disruptive by answering the following questions: What technology or innovation was introduced in the case? Would demanding customers consider the innovation’s performance to be inadequate? Would a different customer group be delighted to use the innovation – despite its limitations –

because it allows them to do something that they couldn’t do effectively or affordably in the past? To what degree is the technology presented in the case potentially disruptive? Can it fit Christensen’s model? If so, which of Christensen’s recommendations make sense to apply to the situation presented in the case? How can the company position its technology to be most disruptive? What recommendations do you have for Waverider or Ecton to best take advantage of the disruptive characteristics?

What techniques might be applied to promote continued innovation at the firm as research becomes available with respect to the market for its product? Take these general recommendations and provide specific recommendations for each company to move forward. Include a minimum of two University Library references. Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Review the sample case. Download and study the guidelines for developing cases. Develop one original fictional case study that portrays a specific diagnosis within the categories of: anxiety, somatoform, or dissociative disorders.

The case description must include all of the DSM criteria necessary to diagnose that disorder, but may also include additional symptoms not found within that diagnostic category. Include some demographic background of the fictional case subject. This portion of the assignment should be 1 to 1 ½ pages.

Mental health professionals are often trained in one or more theoretical orientations. Each theoretical orientation provides a specific insight into why a person acts the way he or she does. The theoretical orientation also guides the professional’s

choice of treatment options to address the symptoms presented by the individual to be treated. Several theoretical explanations of abnormal behavior have been described in your readings for this module. Some of these are biological, psychodynamic, behavioral, existential, cognitive, and sociocultural.

Identify the treatment approach for your case based upon the theory you have chosen to explain the disorder. Then in 2-3 pages, write your own theoretical analysis of case characteristics in relation to the disorder the case represents.

Write the case and theoretical analysis in a 3–4-page paper in Word format. Be sure to include an APA style title page and to cite the online course and the text applying APA standards. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc. Use appropriate extensions for any other formats you use.

From the two or three areas of potential improvement you selected in Week 3, narrow your focus to one performance improvement area. Use this area as the focus for your chosen organization to develop a QI plan.

Research at least three various methodologies for integrating QI strategies into performance measurements.

Research at least three information technology applications–clinical decision support systems–as components of QI management.

Research the involvement ofbenchmarks and milestones in managing QI.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper in which you complete the following: •Describe each methodology you researched. What are the pros and cons of each methodology for your chosen performance improvement area? Choose one of these methodologies for your organizational QI plan. Explain why you chose this methodology over others.

•Describe each information technology application you researched. How might these applications be used to help improve the performance area you chose for your organization? •Explain how benchmarks and milestones are involved in managing the use of quality indicators. Identify three potential benchmarks and milestones from quality indicators that could be used for your plan.

•Describe how performance and quality measures are aligned to an organization’s mission, vision, and strategic plan in general. Then, describe how the measures are aligned with the mission, vision, and strategic plan of your organization. Cite at least three sources to support your information.

Compare and contrast criminal justice organizations with nonprofit organizations.

In a traditional view of criminal justice organizations and nonprofits organizations they are based on providing services and not making money for stockholders.

They are they to serve others and the community within their scope and purpose but they are not there to sell goods to make a profit. Take a simple local hotdog vendor who wants to make a profit/income to use is different than a Police Dept. or Church wanting to give the hotdogs away to build community fellowship or to develop awareness to a local event or issue. Nonprofit organization currently employee around 10% of today’s workforce,

so this is a large number of employees. (Urban Institute, 2010) However, think of nonprofits in a large context than just religious groups and churches but really nonprofits would include hospital as they provide medical services, museums as they provide culture heritage, and others groups like the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army or some environmental groups.

(Riccucci 2012, p. 196) It is easy to see the common thread in these groups which are based on helping and serving others or a local community in which they operate. In this same thought they are very different in their administrative structure, command structure, and employee structure. A Police department has each of these structures clear defined and implemented for the staff to follow a chain of command and even a nonprofit hospital would but most churches will not have these structures as defined nor implemented. For example, look at the number of volunteers in churches but a Police department cannot operate on volunteers.

(Riccucci 2012, p. 207) The work force would become too volatile and unstable with the required personnel needed to operate a shift safely. The lack of personnel makes the Police department fail at the responsibility to protect and serve the community. Yet, the volunteers at a local hospital make it shine and as they promote a tremendous amount of good will on the hospitals behalf. The volunteer also receive a generous amount of training and exposure to the organization which may lead to a future employment opportunity.

Training is a common area that all organizations share because the better trained and equipped a person is a better employee, a happier employee and a longer retained employee. The training also creates efficiency and productivity which allows the business and organizations acquire betters results on their particular area of interest.

Question #2: Compare and contrast criminal justice organizations with nonprofit organizations. The idea that criminal justice organizations and nonprofit organizations have similarities may seem to be disassociated if viewed from a narrow perspective. However, a closer look at the dynamics of how the two entities are structured and how they are purposed reveals a significantly comparative association.

Nonprofit organizations by definition operate under the premise that they are not operating to create revenue that will be distributed to owners or shareholders. Nonprofit does not mean that the organization is not attempting or desires to revenue. Revenue generated is hoped for and will be used to further the mission of the organization.

Police organizations are not purposed for the creation of revenue. However, many of the functions conducted by law enforcement agencies create revenue. The issuance of traffic citations may generate revenue, even though the revenue is created by the citation, the funds will be placed in the city or county general fund to be used as designated by the budget process.

The seizure of property or funds related to criminal investigations may produce funds in great excess. However, these funds will not necessarily by earmarked for the agency the issued the citations or seized the assets. The structure of the two entities may share similarities as well. Each will usually have a chief executive that is responsible for the administration of organization. Also, depending on the size and the number of employees, there may be various supervisory levels responsible for meeting the mission. Unlike police agencies, there is little likelihood that a nonprofit will operate in a paramilitary manner. Perhaps the clearest differentiation between nonprofits and law enforcement organizations is in the area of membership. Nonprofits, such as the Boy Scouts of America,

may place membership constraints and parameters based of certain social issues that a law enforcement agency may not. The example provide in the text by Riccucci (2012), explains the relationship between nonprofits and swearing an oath to God. The impact on the Boy Scouts is that they may continue to have their oath but government sponsorship of them is disallowed. Both law enforcement organizations and nonprofit organizations achieve funding for their budgets from an oversight entity. In the case of the law enforcement agency,

a city council or city manager will approve funds for the budget. Nonprofit organizations will have their budgets approved by a governing board. “A non-profit organization’s governing board should review and adopt an annual budget prior to the start of each fiscal year” (NCDHHS, 2008, p.1)

Essay 1 Assignment:

Like advertisers, producers of television shows and movies often argue that they do not create problems, but simply reflect the values of society. Do you think this is the case? Do TV and film simply reflect the values of society, or do they have an influence on the way people behave? To answer this question, choose a particular film or television genre and analyze how it either reflects society (or a segment of society) or influences it.

Write an essay in which you explain your perspective on whether film or television influences society or simply reflects its values. Take into account the views expressed by any of the writers in this chapter. Focus on a specific film or television genre about which you have formed an opinion regarding how it reflects or encourages certain social values or kinds of behavior after reading the assigned texts. Supplement those readings with additional research. Then explain in detail your own position using the class readings and your research to support your analysis of the film or television genre you are focusing on and how it either reflects or influences its audience. For instance, you could focus on popular sitcoms like Modern Family and analyze how they reflect current values in American society or, alternatively, how they promote them (depending on your argument). As another example, you could choose a film series like the Fast and the Furious and analyze either how it has an impact on youth today or simply reflects the values already there, again depending on your position.

Your first task is to provide your readers with sufficient background information to understand the specific genre you have chosen to consider, identifying the features that define the genre, the history of genre, and how your example TV shows or films fit into that genre.

Your second task is to provide your readers with some background information to understand the specific position you are taking with regard to whether your chosen genre has an impact on society or simply reflects it. You will then need to develop a supportable thesis reflecting your perspective on the way this television or film genre influences or is influenced by society.

Your third task is to use well-chosen examples and facts to support your thesis. Use a minimum of three sources to do this. Provide support, including at least one citation in every body paragraph. (Remember, you must cite a source any time you summarize, paraphrase or quote an idea that is not your own.) Although quotes are generally used sparingly, a minimum of four quotes is required for this paper.

Create a Works Cited page that is properly formatted in MLA.  Chapters 6 & 7 in PCI give these directions.

Because this is an academic piece of writing based on facts and research, the use of the personal pronoun “I” is probably inappropriate. Do not use phrases like, “In my opinion,” as you are making an argument supported by evidence, not just stating your beliefs. You are writing for a general academic audience that has little knowledge of the topic you are discussing.

Page Limit:  4 -6 pages plus a Works Cited page (MLA format)
